Alternate PL – Call to Action

Backstory

Professional development does not always lead to implementation in the classroom or job duties. There are many reasons for this but two important reasons are that teachers don’t have a voice in what training they will be attending, and there is not any follow up or support. In addition, there is no incentive for implementing the strategy or skill.

I not only experience this myself, but in my leadership role, I see what my teachers experience as well. To help give teachers a voice in what training they attend and give them an incentive for implementing a new skill, I am creating a badging system.

I will be surveying the teachers to gauge their interest in many different programs and skill level in using those programs.  The badges teachers can earn this year will be driven by the results of the survey. I will be using the 5 Principles of Effective Professional Development when training the teachers. Each one of these principles will help ensure teachers are implementing the new skill or strategy.

Staff members will be grouped by skill level instead of content level. This will require more than one  content specific example for each training. Though this part will  require extra work, it is worth it because grouping by skill level will help reduce stress for my less tech savvy  teachers.

Resources

I used Google Slides  and a template from Slides Carnival to create the slide deck for my video. The reason that I chose this is because I really like the simplicity of the design in this particular slide deck and by using Google I had access to the slides on different computers.

The images I used from Unplash and Pexels, which both are free image sites. In addition, I used clip art included with the Slides Carnival template.

To create the video I filmed the green screen videos with my MacBook Pro and used a  Blu Snowball microphone to help eliminate any background noise. The green screen was fabric I put up on my home office. I used Camtasia 2020 as my movie making software. I used this program because I have been making videos for my district all summer on this program and I am comfortable with it. I had not used the green screen effect, so that was a learning experience when creating this video.

The final product was compiled and then uploaded to YouTube to ensure everyone who has the ability to open the file.
