What Is and What Can Be

August 29, 2020

One way to create an effective call to action is to use Duarte’s 5 Rules: treat your audience as king, spread ideas and move people, help them see what you are saying, practice design and decoration, and cultivate healthy relationships (Duarte, 2009).  These are all rules that are important when creating any presentation.

In her TEDx talk, Duarte said “You have the power to change the world… an idea” (TEDx, 2010 ) This is a powerful statement that resonates with me. I have an idea to change professional learning, and I must find the best way to present it so that it is implemented.

My personal background is so different from that of my students. I grew up in a small town in Wyoming…I graduated with 30 students total. There are almost 400 students per grade level in my school. I say this because even though my background is very different, some things are the same. These similarities are a story I plan to tell.

In my plan I will be “selling” a new way to professional development to my administration and also to my teachers. My administration is open to my suggestions as far as professional development goes, so it will be the easier “sell”. Teacher buy-in will be the challenge as some of them are resistant to change. To win them over, I need to show the “what is and what can be” (TEDx, 2010).
